Reading for Success

Reading is the main emphasis in Title I classrooms.  Appalachia Elementary, St. Paul Elementary, J.W. Adams Combined, Coeburn Primary, Powell Valley Primary, and Wise Primary Title I students are active participants in a program of Reading for Success which includes:

Read Aloud  The teacher selects and reads a book or selection to the children.

Shared Reading The teacher introduces and reads a big book.  The children join in on refrains or in multiple readings.

Guided Reading The teacher selects and introduces a new book.  The children read the whole book to themselves.

Independent Reading The children read to themselves or with partners.

In addition to the high quality education Wise County Schools provides, students in Title I have access to additional learning opportunities. Students benefit from small class sizes, highly qualified teachers, reading specialists, and an abundance of technology devices. Throughout the year, all students attending Title I activities receive age appropriate books that they may keep in their home libraries for students and families to read together.
