About

Union High School is a 9-12 consolidated school of Appalachia High School and Powell Valley High School. The school began operation in August of 2011 and moved into the new facility in Big Stone Gap in January of 2014. Union serves 620-660 students annually, offering coursework in art, music, business, technical, Advanced Placement, and dual enrollment classes. UHS has a staff of 43 faculty, eight administrative and guidance, four custodians, seven cafeteria staff, and a full-time school nurse.

Mission Statement

Our mission at Union High School is to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages the development of interpersonal skills, career opportunities, intellectual growth, and ethical behavior so that students may become effective and productive members of society.    

Goal 

Our goal is to equip each student with a positive expectation for career development, a sense of place and purpose in the community at large, and a lifelong love of learning.

Union High School Believes In The Following:

  • promoting a safe, orderly environment, responsible citizenship, multicultural understanding, tolerance, and the highest standards of personal conduct; creating a unified sense of purpose and dedication to excellence in learning among students, teachers, parents, and the community at large; 

  • providing a challenging curriculum that encourages academic growth as well as career and technology development; 

  • supporting an atmosphere of positive reinforcement that enhances student learning, self-esteem, and the opportunity for students to develop to their fullest potential; 

  • developing skills, strategies, and techniques that enable students and teachers to become lifelong independent learners; 

  • fostering positive social and interpersonal skills; and, 

  • equipping each student with a positive expectation for career development as well as a sense of place and purpose in the community at large. 

Athletics:

Union High School offers interscholastic sports programs through the Virginia High School League in Group 2A It is a member school of the Mountain District (www.mountaindistrictva.org), and Region 2D.
